Orora Cares: Helping Families in Need Enjoy a Turkey Dinner

February 4, 2019

Every year, Canadian couple Mike and Deanna Diad plan, set up and host an event that has changed their local community for the better. Their mission – to provide families with holiday dinner essentials so they too can enjoy a hot meal with their loved ones.

Three years ago, “Talking over Turkey” started off as a small initiative to provide some turkeys and other food items to families in need over the holiday season in December. Every year since, it has grown in size. With the help from many, the Diabs were able to give out 600 turkeys in 2018.

Last year, the Diabs approached our Orora Fresh coworkers to see if we could support their project by designing and donating the packaging. Local grocery stores and private donors had made the turkeys and all of the accompanying sides available, but they were at a loss for packaging. They came to the right place!

With the assistance of our manufacturing facility, we were able to happily donate the corrugated materials to build the boxes. Our graphics team created a design for the boxes with fantastic artistry and incorporated the logos of all of the donors – including Orora. We brought all of the materials into our facility, assembled it with a team of volunteers in our warehouse, and delivered it to the designated site. We also rallied volunteers internally and gathered an eager team of volunteers to be present the day of the event. The team assisted with packing, preparing and stacking the boxes, and eventually carried them out for the families to receive their turkey package.

We felt honored to be such an integral part of this event. Seeing the community come together to provide for those in need was a rewarding experience for our Orora coworkers and is something we are looking forward to doing more of.
We value partnering with our community. If you know of an opportunity where Orora can make a difference, please contact us here!
